Chelsea v Liverpool
Chelsea host Liverpool on Friday night at Stamford Bridge, in what looks a mouth-watering Premier League tie. Antonio Conte’s men dropped their first points of the season last weekend with a draw at Swansea, which was predicted by us. Liverpool however returned to winning ways with a convincing victory over Champions Leicester City.
Chelsea will be buoyed by the recent form of their striker Diego Costa, who has now scored four goals in as many games this season. He, like many of the Chelsea team looked to have lost their way last season, however he has come back this season looking stronger than ever and he will be a handful for the visitors.
Another player who has regained his form is Eden Hazard. With two goals and an assist so far this season, Hazard looks more like the player who had the world at his feet this time two seasons ago. On his day he can unlock a defence in a matter of strides, Liverpool will have to keep a close eye on him if they are going to stop him influencing the game.
Liverpool are becoming an exciting team to watch and now possess a huge amount of pace and power in attack. Sadio Mane looks a great signing, Roberto Firmino found his goal scoring boots again last week with a brace and Daniel Sturridge looked like he was enjoying himself once again.
They have so much quality going forward that Phillipe Coutinho was left on the bench last week with no adverse effect to the team. Who would have thought that was possible this time last season?
Despite Chelsea’s good start to the season, this is their first big challenge. I honestly believe Chelsea would be happy with a point on Friday evening and with Conte having limited time to input a new philosophy, it would not surprise me if they sat back as a solid unit and tried to breach the Liverpool defence on the Counter attack.
The away side will have to prove solid enough at the back to contain Costa and Hazard, with Oscar and Willian more than likely going to assist them in their advances. I would be tempted to play a holding midfielder if I was Jurgen Klopp, to bolster his defences. Then use his five attacking players and wing backs to break down a dogged Chelsea defence. It will be interesting how David Luiz reacts in what looks like his first start back at the club, will he be Jekyll or Hyde?
Our Verdict
It’s a tough game to predict but is certainly one for tactical analysts to get stuck in to on the night. If I had to pick a result I would have to go with the draw.
Everton v Middlesbrough
Ronald Koeman has made a blistering start to his life at Goodison Park, with his side unbeaten in their four games and a confidence boosting 3-0 victory at Sunderland on Monday. Their opponents on Saturday evening are Middlesbrough, who will also be pretty happy with their start to Premier League life finding themselves in the top half after four games.
Romelu Lukaku returned to goal scoring form last week and his hat-trick is bound to have given him self-belief, he appeared to be enjoying his football again having had a mixed summer with many rumours of him leaving the club.
He has stayed with Everton and it looks like a decision he won’t regret, with the club having spent big and well during the transfer window. Everton have bolstered their defence with Ashley Williams whilst Idrissa Gueye looking a snip of a signing from Aston Villa. Their club transfer record was broken in signing Yannick Bolasie, but that doesn’t look like money poorly spent. Bolasie is a player with plenty of tricks up his sleeve and looks to have a bright future on Merseyside.
Middlesbrough have spent a smaller amount in the summer, but have spent to build their squad more than vastly improving their starting XI. Alvaro Negredo looks a good signing for them though and appears to have learned from his previous spell at Manchester City. He now looks a handful for defenders and is bound to score 10 goals plus this season.
One player who has had to bide his time at Middlesbrough, following a mixed spell at Wigan Athletic, is Adam Forshaw. He returns to his old club having earned his place at the heart of the Boro midfield, he will want to prove himself in front of his home town fans.
Our Verdict
It is tough to see past Everton this weekend and at 8/11 they look great value. They have to be part of my acca this week
Tottenham v Sunderland
Tottenham’s 4-0 drubbing of Stoke last weekend couldn’t have come at a better time, with Harry Kane’s first goal since scoring for England before the Euro’s. He has looked so short on confidence that there was a worry that he may drop off a cliff, like so many have. However it will be interesting to see if he uses his goal from last week to propel himself forward, with this weekend’s game the opportune time to get himself back amongst the goals.
Sunderland are a team in dire straits, which is bad news for them given that there are only four games of the season gone. They only just survived last season and after bringing David Moyes in, hopes for a better time would have been high. However with their new manager stating at the start of the season not to expect much, as it takes a lot of time to turn it around, things didn’t look great. Their players are now saying they can’t understand each other due to the language barrier, so it is going to take a miracle for them to get anything at this stage away at a Spurs. A side looking to build on their finishing position from last season.
Our Verdict
Spurs are 1/3 for the win but those odds are justifiable based on the current situations between the clubs. They have to be added to the acca.
