Summary of Bets
The main focus of the USPGA Championship will be on Rory McIlroy’s return from injuring his ankle during a football game. The prices for this tournament will probably be the highest you will see for the Irishman however it will be tough for him to win a major having not played in any tournament for several months. He will however have had plenty of practice of late and the 14/1 is very tempting for a place but not in my opinion to win.
Jordan Spieth continues to show excellent form and but for an 8th hole blunder at the Open Championship he could be coming here looking to win all 4 majors this year. With 8/1 available he will certainly give you a good run for your money.
Another who is sure to go well this week is Jason Day. The Australian has been very consistent however is still awaiting his first major victory. Although he has been well tipped I don’t feel he has the metal for the battle at the business end and therefore although he is good each way value I won’t be investing on him to win the tournament.
Favourites are not my cup of tea for a golf tournament and I tend to look for value down the field. One player I do believe is capable of winning a major is Rickie Fowler. He is another consistent player who is maturing with every tournament and you can tell he loves his golf. He’s an accurate golfer off the tee which is crucial on this tough course and his putting seems to be getting better and better. At 22/1 he is well worth a dabble.
Adam Scott back with Steve Williams as caddy played very well at the Open and is certainly capable of winning any major as he has already proved. If he comes here in similar form to the Open he will be well in the mix come Sunday. He’s available at 33/1.
Martin Kaymer was the previous major winner at Whistling Straits but hasn’t hit that form for the past couple of years however he showed a glimmer of his former self at St Andrews and if he can return to the same form of his 2010 USPGA win then he’d romp away with this so at 66/1 he can’t go unbacked.
Tiger Woods is a massive 70/1, the biggest price he probably has ever been and although he’s been talking a good game of late he hasn’t been producing performances anywhere near required to win this. He seems a shadow of his former self and although in hindsight I wouldn’t touch him with a bargepole until he shown some sign of life on course the odds are making him very temping.
Branden Grace will be my final investment. Having seen him in action at St Andrews the South African is in good form and strikes a ball extremely well. It will take a lot based on his past performances to win this but he’s improving and is worth a punt at 80/1.
